If you’ve stood the test of time in the wild, wild west of marketing on social media sites as a small business owner you know that it takes some effort and planning to maintain a solid face for your brand.
With the continuous launch of new social media platforms over the passed decade, consumers are joyously distracted and inundated with different forms of media. But nowadays, so is the business owner.
Yes, we should always be considering how and where to better increase brand awareness. But is more social media better? Better yet, does your business belong on every social media platform? Hmz, let’s discuss…

Here are a couple of interesting statistics to consider about social media to clarify the real intent when using social media platforms for business.

A two way conversation with your customer sounds like a good idea right? But what if your content and best marketing efforts on a particular platform aren’t yielding a response? Should you be there?
It really is up to you to decide if a platform is actually worth your time in driving quality traffic to your sales funnel but my suggestion would be this.
Give it some due diligence, engage with others in your niche for some time there, and monitor the traffic back to your website.
If a particular platform isn’t giving any significant measurable results you can always still share your content but I wouldn’t spend much time or energy other than that.
Must-have social media sites
There are some social media platforms that I believe are non-negotiable and a must-have. I think we can all agree that Facebook is right up there at the top with 82% of all small businesses registered on there.

Among other social media sites Twitter is the next heavy hitter. It’s just a great way to micro-blog and keep your customers or followers up to date on the spot.

More than 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month. -YouTube
Google+ is growing significantly more popular these days and will continue to increase. One of the reasons I love Google+ and find it as an absolute necessity is because of the guaranteed first page visibility of Google+ circles viewing your content.
You can also Link your Google+ profile to the content you create through Google authorship. Google authorship enables your profile photo from a Google+ and byline to appear next to your link on search results pages.

LinkedIn is a platform you should be on to establish yourself professionally in your market space. In my opinion and depending on your business you may not need this.
For example, network marketers promoting products and services that will help other business owners or customers should absolutely be here but promoting the opportunity side will annoy people.
Moreover, small business owners need to be here and although it may not be as “popular” as Facebook or some of the other players it is a massive tool to drive traffic back to your site.

The platforms you chose will be important but what’s more important is that you focus on the ones that are giving you the most action for your business.
Remember we’re using social media as a means to engage and get personal with our customers and if you spread attention too thin then the quality of the engagement begins to dilute.
As a rule share your content to as many platforms as you can. There a bunch I left out in this post but you only need to focus on a few to engage with those that are interested in your product or service.
